TOPPLE (Sikic, 2020) is a body of work composed of a series of images of locations in Manhattan, NY that are closed and covered with wooden boards to prevent looting, this as a consequence of the COVID-19 virus and the demonstrations that occurred in 2020 against the existing systemic racism in the United States, in response to the death of George Floyd. The union of the protests in favor of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement, together with the state the city was in as a consequence of the virus quarantines, presented the perfect combination to bring ‘the city that never sleeps’, and the core of capitalism, to an unexpected sleeping state from a financial point of view, but at the same time hyperactive from a social point of view. Seeing stores and businesses completely covered and disabled, TOPPLE offers us an apocalyptic vision of the world’s cities, and invites us to reflect on the consequences of existing in a context in which consumerism is relegated to the background.
