VIGIL GONZALES is proud to present To Make Cinema And Other Poetic Objects, an exhibition of Los Angeles-based filmmaker and artist Andrea Franco (Lima, 1981), featuring the film Notes I and exclusively selected stills.
The exhibition opens on May 23rd, 2021 and on view through June 27th, 2021.
Notes I meditates on water's transcendence of borders by means of the coastal landscape of California. The permutable and drawing ocean submerges and provides a boundless space. Shot in 2016, the piece holds relevance to current debatable issues.
The film screened during Pacific Standard Time, ISM ISM ISM: Experimental Cinema in Latin America, Los Angeles (2017); and at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions - Open Air Prisons (2016).

Notes on Connection is a film series reclaiming ancestral Andean, Native American and Kabbalistic beliefs and cosmogonies where the relationship with our surroundings, nature and time is different than those of the west.

We can conceive a certain type of filming capable of treating each segment of the world and the objects it contains "case by case." Portals have been present in my work as symmetry between places, and now I'm moving towards portals as access to information, to supernal worlds and alternate realities. The Image as Portal. Everything is contained and can be accessed in the portal: all knowledge, circuitry, time/history, nourishment, healing. What happens within the mind, for the Andean Illa Teqsi: for the Kabbalists Ein Sof, endless, infinite, all-encompassing.
Parallel to the films, I am looking for other visual manifestations of the portals in the film footage, particular to natural landscape and elements. The image as portal in a different manifestation — Works on print using the 16mm negative.
