  • Lima, 1989.

Daughter of Sarhua artists, Juan Walberto Quispe Michue and Gaudencia Yupari Quispe, Violeta continues the family legacy by exploring contemporary themes from the Sarhua visual tradition with which she coexists and on which she expresses herself from a critical feminist stance. As part of her training, she completed the Diploma in Cultural Management at MALI (Museo de Arte de Lima) in collaboration with UNESCO. Through her artistic practice, she makes visible the place of the Sarhuina woman in the workplace, transgressing the spaces traditionally reserved for men. In a cross between art and activism, her images have also explored themes such as the political crisis or resilience in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The flora and fauna of the Andean community are a constant in his work. In 2018 he introduced typical Sarhua scenes with humanized Andean animals. In 2019 he founded the VIGA workshop that comprises the Sarhuino Art Route in Chorrillos. Her project Warmipas maqanakuy kay Bicentenario [Continuous struggle of the women of the Bicentennial] is part of the Bicentennial Collection of Traditional Art and Crafts of the Ministry of Culture and in 2022 she was a finalist in the XIII National Painting Contest of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru. His work has been exhibited at MATP, Casa O`Higgins (Lima, 2021), LUM (Lima, 2021), MUCEN (Lima, 2022.) In 2020 he participated in the 8th General Assembly of the Convention as representatives of the native communities of the Latin American and Caribbean region. Organized by UNESCO and the UN for her contribution and resilience in times of covid-19 with her project of masks with art. In 2021 she was recognized for the International Women’s Day by the Municipality of Lima being the first woman to obtain this award in the category of art and culture.

His work is currently part of the traveling exhibition Indigenous Stories produced in collaboration between MASP and the Kode Bergen Art Museum, (20.10.23 – 25.02.24 São Paulo / 26.04.2024 – 25.08.24 Kode). Accompanied by an extensive bilingual catalog in English and Portuguese, with reproductions of all the works on view and essays by the 12 curators in charge of the exhibition under the curatorial coordination of Guilherme Giufrida, adjunct curator, MASP and Adriano Pedrosa, artistic director, MASP and next curator of the 60th Venice Biennale 2024.
