Jose Pedro Godoy
José Pedro Godoy’s work (b. 1985, Santiago, Chile) is mainly developed in painting, addresses the relationship between high and low culture, the ways of representing the melodramatic and the corny, and the tensions and narratives that occur between good and evil, nature and artifice, pleasure and pain or luxury and lust, focusing his research on the male nude, its erotic quality and how the idea of masculinity is constructed from it.
His solo exhibitions include Extraño del mar (Galería Vigil Gonzáles, Lima, Peru, 2020), Animales Salvajes (La Fresh Gallery, Madrid, 2018), Historia violenta y luminosa (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Santiago, Chile 2016), The beloved, (WhiteBox NY, New York, USA 2013), El progreso del amor (MAVI, Santiago, Chile, 2012) and Heliogábalo (Sala Gasco, Santiago, Chile, 2010).
He has participated in numerous group exhibitions, in spaces such as MAMM (Medellin, 2017), Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Cerrillos (Santiago, 2017), MAC (Santiago, 2017, 2014), MAVI (Santiago, 2013, 2008), Galería Gabriela Mistral (Santiago, 2008), Matucana 100 (2009), Concreta Gallery (Santiago, 2009), MAC Valdivia (2008) and also in art fairs such as ArteBA, Chaco and Pinta, highlighting ARCO Madrid 2015 Solo Projects Focus Latin America section, where he was a finalist for the Illy Sustain Art Award. His awards also include the Fondart award in 2012 and 2015 and second place in the MAVI Young Art competition (2008).
In 2017 he published Figuras recortadas por otra luz, a monograph that brings together a selection of his work made between the years 2006-2016. In addition, his painting has been included in numerous publications both in Chile and abroad.
